The Brutalist (2024) - dir. Brady Corbet
I finally caught this film after a long period of anticipation on its opening weekend. Because of apparent issues with Norwich cinemas, my son and I had to make the journey to Cambridge - complicated by engineering works on the line - to be able to see it on IMAX. We went to The Light cinema in Cambridge, which is a good screen, although some seemed to think it was more of a cafe and ate and crunched through the whole thing... If you're going, row B is a good choice - plenty of legroom.
There has been plenty written about this film.
Wendy Ide's review in 'The Guardian' sets the tone for other pieces.
Brutalism is an architectural style of course. This article in 99% Invisible explores this.
It's also a reflection on the brutality of the Holocaust, which is a constant thread through the film right to the end.
It's about the treatment of migrants in the USA.... hmmm... and the persistence of inequality due to privilege of the wealthy.... hmmm.
I hope it does well at the Oscars. It picked up some key awards at the BAFTAs.
