Mar 27: Oscars

The Academy Awards are held this evening in Hollywood.

They are back in person after a few virtual years.

My predictions are locked in. It will be interesting to see whether Apple TV wins with CODA.

The statuette that is received by winners is iconic.

Oscar stands 13½ inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8½ pounds. The film reel features five spokes, signifying the five original branches of the Academy: actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers. Although the statuette remains true to its original design, the size of the base varied until 1945, when the current standard was adopted.

I did a few searches on 'Geography' and 'Oscar' to see what came up, and found some interesting snippets and research.

The geographical divide of Oscar winners - this research and mapping from 2017 showed how certain films were far more popular in particular regions of the USA, linked with demographics and income levels amongst other factors.

National Geographic won their first Oscar for 'Free Solo' in 2019. Other films have shone a light on particular regions and issues.

There has also been the gradual addition of Oscar winners from different countries over the years.

Update: CODA did win, and there were a few unexpected moments of controversy....
