May 11: Delicatessen (1991) dir. Jean Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro

Delicatessen is set in a dystopican version of a French(?) city.

The main setting is a boarding house, run by a butcher, complete with the subways below the building.

This surrealistic world is a meatless and cannibalistic one, and ‘real’ food is a highly expensive commodity that is used as currency for grain.

It has a wonderful aesthetic which is also helped by the sound design, starting with the creak of the bed springs. The trailer makes the bold design to focus on just one scene from the film, rather than attempting to share something of the wider story:

A New York Times piece from 2010 looking at the aesthetics and curious nature of the film.

This is an excellent piece on the origins of the films design and aesthetic as well.

Jean Pierre Jeunet's films are always visually stunning and very 'French'.
