Apr 5: Threads (1984) dir. Mick Jackson - written by Barry Hines
Threads was first broadcast on BBC Two on 23rd September 1984 at 9:30 pm, and achieved the highest ratings on the channel (6.9 million) of the week
It led to headlines which are mentioned here.
It tells the story of a nuclear attack on the UK with a bomb dropped over Sheffield.
The Horrified Magazine article here is worth reading.
At the time, there was a very real fear of a nuclear conflict which would result in mutually assured destruction (MAD). The 'Protect and Survive' leaflet and public information films were also parodied and dealt with by Raymond Briggs in his 'When the Wind Blows', and also Edge of Darkness.
Download Protect and Survive from here.
Your memories of seeing Threads welcome.
