Jun 21: Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1959) dir. Henry Levin
A classic film which was based on the classic book by Jules Verne.
It starts in Iceland within the crater of a volcano on the Snaefellsness peninsula, which can be seen from the city of Reykjavik's shoreline, and then the party heads ever deeper, lit by special lamps. There are some good performances from James Mason and others. The effects are of their time, but the scenery of the subterranean world is well rendered, and there are some good action features, plus some stop-motion action which was de rigueur at the time...
There is also a link with volcanic activity, although I'm not convincd its geologically accurate - it does at least solve the problem of how people get back to the surface.
The other option to engage with the story is to catch Rick Wakeman's musical version.Another version of the film was released in 1988, which didn't have the same impact.
