Jul 12: Walkabout (1971) dir. Nicolas Roeg

Walkabout was directed by Nicolas Roeg. It's described as a survival film.

There are several themes which are worth exploring here. This weekend, there was an interview with Jenny Agutter where she talked about the film. At only 16 years old, she would no longer be allowed to do some of the nude scenes that she did in that film. They add significantly to the charged atmosphere of the film, which has its moments of mystery.

The first theme to consider is the representation of the Australian landscape. This is mysterious and challenging, although the pool where Agutter swims is like a mini Eden.

Another is the representation of the indigenous Aboriginals and their relationship with the land and the notion of going Walkabout.

Modern films have also explored this relationship and the issues that have been raised over the decades without reparations for the indigenous peoples on whose land all Australians live.

I have previously featured 'Rabbit Proof Fence' on the blog.

Films I watched today:

Chase a crooked shadow (1958) dir. Michael Anderson

Suspense about an heiress whose brother returns from the dead, and she can't persuade the local Spanish police chief (Herbert Lom) that the person is an impersonator. Good performaces by Anne Baxter and Richard Todd too. Slightly convoluted plot with a few holes.
