Oct 21: The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) - dir. Martin McDonagh

Films I watched today... this one - to mark the start of the half term holiday, which was much needed.

I finally caught up with the film which my son and wife watched in London last week. It was also a good way to celebrate the end of a long half term.

Headed to Cinema City in Norwich which is one of our favourite places to watch a film, outside of the BFI Screen One.

The Aran Islands were the location for the filming and the small patchwork of films and stone walls is the first thing that is seen as the film opens.

Production designer Mark Tyldesley said:

“To live on the islands, people built walls from the rock, so you have this patchwork quilt of tiny, small plots of land,” says Tildesley, a newcomer to the region. “You end up with this extraordinary, ancient pattern of rock walls, which in Martin’s script is written almost like a labyrinth—a maze in which these two characters live.

This Disney piece talks about the landscape and themes of the film.

I have seen them before from the mainland but never visited. I've also read the books of Thomas O' Crohan which portray this lifestyle.

The film is set in 1923.

This Esquire piece also focuses on the clothes work by the actors. There is a shirt worn by Colin Farrell which I particularly coveted.

This is a stunning film which you need to go and see.

A small featurette - SPOILER ALERT
