Oct 28: Seaside Special (2021) dir. Jens Meurer
It's always interesting, as I mentioned in previous posts, to see films which are made in a location which you are familiar with, particularly when they mess with the geography of that place to suit the filming. It will be interesting to see how the 'Maestro' film explores the scenes in and around Ely, where Bernstein conducted one of his most famous performances in Ely Cathedral.
This film was featured on the local news magazine programmes today. It's showing at the Cambridge Film Festival.
It features Olly Day and other cast members from the famous end of the pier show on Cromer Pier in north Norfolk.DescriptionShot on crisp 16mm Kodak film, Seaside Special follows Norfolk’s Cromer Pier Show over the course of a year from the perspective of the performers and the seaside town’s locals.
Seaside Special is a genuine, funny and bittersweet documentary about the trials and tribulations of life on the stage and the divided political perspectives of their community.
The director Jens Meurer (An Impossible Project), seeks to show a ‘microcosm of Brexit England’ and reflects on the impact of the changing tourist landscape, alongside the cultural importance of Cromer’s show, as they prepare for their grande summer finale.
Here's the trailer for the film:
