Feb 19: Recommended FIlm Soundtracks #2: Grand Budapest Hotel - Alexandre Desplat
“I always want to use music to tell the story and give the movie a certain kind of mood. That’s always essential to me.”
Wes Anderson
Alexandre Desplat is one of a number of musicians who are linked with the movies of particular directors and are very much part of the whole experience of the film and its marketing. He has produced soundtracks for a number of films, which are ranked in this Far Out magazine website post.
Here's one of the tracks from 'Grand Budapest Hotel' - one of the best known soundtracks.
See a separate post on the film itself, which is one of my favourites.
KES (1969) dir. Ken Loach
This is an absolute classic of a movie. It's one that is based in the pit communities around Barnsley and a young boy who rears a kestrel chick, to find calm in his life of challenge. There are some wonderful performances from Brian Glover and others - the PE teacher sequences are all memorable. Lynn Perrie, who plays Billy Casper's mum used to live down the road from me in Maltby.
It's a particular affecting film, and the star David Bradley has said that he can't watch the ending.
I've taught at two schools which were known as KES, and this was my potential response when I left the first one :)
